The Wisconsin Arts Board and Oneida Nation Arts Program present “The ABCs of Residencies: An Introductory Workshop for Teaching Artists.” This workshop will cover essential topics for teaching artists who offer residencies and presentations in schools. The workshop occurred in three Wisconsin communities during August and September 2010. Due to continued interest, we are adding a fourth workshop in Spring Green on November 30, 2010. The hosting partner for this workshop is the River Valley Elementary Studio School Charter Governing Council.
Interactive sessions will help artists to communicate clearly about their artwork with educators, introduce key concepts about working in schools, and will review actual teaching techniques that other artists have utilized in their residencies. The workshop will also cover ways to market your presentations to educational institutions.
Attending this workshop will allow artists listed in WAB’s Artists in Education Directory, WAB’s Wisconsin Folks website, and ONAP’s Seeds of Knowledge program to be acknowledged in those directories as having received training specifically for working in educational settings. This is intended to serve as a ‘value added’ element for those artists’ marketing.
This workshop is made possible through an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Attending artists will be supported through that award, meaning that the $300 registration per person will be covered and attendees traveling over 50 miles will be reimbursed for mileage.

Stuart Stotts
Stuart Stotts has worked as a teaching artist in schools around the country for nearly 25 years. Besides working in schools, he leads workshops for school teachers and other educators. He has a particular interest in strengthening the role of teaching artists in schools. Stuart is a Kennedy Center Teaching Artist, a songwriter, a storyteller and an author from Deforest, Wisconsin.
Beth Bashara
Beth Bashara is the director of the Oneida Nation Arts Program, a tribal local arts agency. She developed and oversees the SEEDS program which provides schools with funds to hire Native teaching artists from the Oneida Nation Arts Program roster. Prior to her work in Oneida, she was the arts-in-education program manager for the Indiana Arts Commission. Beth remains active in working with artists in the schools and advocating the value of arts in education.
Anne Pryor
Anne Pryor is the former Folk and Traditional Arts Specialist at the Wisconsin Arts Board. With training in education and cultural anthropology, she has worked as a folklorist-in-residence at schools in Wisconsin and taught learners of multiple ages and abilities in many different types of settings. Anne manages the Creative Communities – Arts in Education grant program at WAB and directs WAB’s Folk Arts Program.
