The photo displayed above was taken inside Artists Gallery, a cooperative gallery in Racine established in 1998, with over two dozen local and regional member artists. In the gallery, various works are displayed, from ceramics, textiles, paper, jewelry, woodworking, and more. In this photo, WAB staff members Karen and Kaitlyn are looking at some fantastic postcards!

Artist Collectives, Centers, Cooperatives

Artist collectives, centers, and cooperatives can all loosely be regarded as groups that help support creativity and strengthen connectivity within an arts community. There are key differences between the groups; collectives are usually a group initiated by artists who work together towards shared aims, like sharing materials or space, following shared values, living together, and more. Artist or art centers can be typically understood as community centers with a focus on art accessibility, providing space to practice art, attend workshops, exhibit gallery spaces, and more. Artist cooperatives are autonomous organizations that are jointly owned and democratically guided by its members, providing benefits to those members like studios, education resources, equipment, and more.

We know connectivity is important for Wisconsin's arts ecosystem, so we’ve gathered a resource list with artist collectives, cooperatives, and centers from different regions of the state, as well as Wisconsin-wide/Midwest organizations.
