Welcome to our series, Spotlighting Wisconsin! This series spotlights arts organizations across the state (including some of our wonderful grantees), and showcases the amazing work they do in their communities, along with sharing the why, or what drives them as an organization to do the work they do.
The Stoughton Opera House Friends Association (SOHFA)
Stoughton, WisconsinThe Stoughton Opera House Friends Association (SOHFA) was established in 2014 to raise friends and funds in support of the historic Stoughton Opera House. Since then, SOHFA has contributed more than $500,000 toward preserving and enhancing this beloved historic space—helping keep it working for the community as a place for quality live music (80 shows per season), culture (history and community led restoration), and community life in south-central Wisconsin.
Through philanthropy, community partnerships, and volunteer efforts, SOHFA has helped fund key capital improvements such as seating restoration and cushions, sound and lighting upgrades, accessibility and safety enhancements, backstage renovations, original fire curtain restoration and the creation of the Ghost Light Lounge (the pre-show meeting area). These projects ensure the Opera House continues to welcome artists and audiences while honoring its historic charm.
Beyond the stage, SOHFA also shines a light on the Opera House’s broader impact. Each year, SOHFA produces a local impact report showing that the Opera House serves more than 30,000 audience members annually, which in turn contributing over $3.2 million to local businesses—above and beyond ticket sales. Every contribution to SOHFA helps sustain this community and economic engine, ensuring the Opera House remains a source of pride, inspiration, and connection for generations to come.
